Retractable awning

A folding-arm fabric awning that extends when you want shade and rolls away into a cassette when you do not. For balconies, patios and shopfronts where a fixed roof is not allowed or not wanted.

A retractable awning in Malaysia costs about RM 400 – 900 per metre of width for a manual unit, and most motorised installations land at RM 6,000 – 15,000 depending on width, projection and cassette type. Motor, remote and a power point are added to the manual price.

Types

  • Open folding-arm: lowest cost, fabric exposed when rolled
  • Semi-cassette: roller protected, arms exposed
  • Full cassette: everything sealed inside an aluminium box. Our default for condos and anywhere the awning is visible when closed

Fabric

  • Solution-dyed acrylic: colourfast, water-repellent, 8 – 10 years
  • PVC-coated polyester: fully waterproof, stiffer, 5 – 8 years
  • Widths up to 6 m, projection up to 3.5 m per unit

Control

  • Manual crank or motorised with remote
  • Wind sensor retracts the awning automatically; essential on high floors

Where it works best

  • Condominium balconies, with management approval
  • Patios and gardens where a fixed roof would shade the house
  • Café, restaurant and shop frontages

Where it does not

  • Car porches: fabric is not a car roof. Use glass, ACP or PU metal
  • Anywhere left extended through a storm

Questions people ask

How much is a retractable awning in Malaysia?

Manual units run about RM 400 – 900 per metre of width installed. Motorised full-cassette units for a typical 4 m balcony land at RM 8,000 – 15,000 with remote and wind sensor.

Can I install a retractable awning on a condo balcony?

Usually, with written approval from management. A cassette unit fixed to the slab or wall is the type most managements accept. We supply the drawing for the application.

How long does the fabric last?

Solution-dyed acrylic lasts 8 – 10 years in Malaysia. Replacement fabric costs roughly RM 400 – 1,200 for a standard width and the frame is kept.

Is a retractable awning waterproof?

Water-repellent, not waterproof, unless PVC fabric is chosen. Light rain is fine. In a storm the awning should be retracted, which the wind sensor does automatically.
