Types of awning in Malaysia
Seven roofing types, compared on the things that matter under a tropical sun: light, heat, rain noise, lifespan, cost and where each one belongs.
The types of awning used in Malaysia are glass, ACP, PU metal, aluminium louvres, retractable fabric, polycarbonate and zinc. For a house, the choice usually comes down to glass or ACP at the front, PU metal at the back, and a louvred pergola over any space you want to sit in.

Awning versus pergola
- An awning is attached to the house wall and usually has a solid or glass roof
- A pergola is a frame on posts, and in Malaysia almost always means aluminium louvres that open and close
- Pergolas cost more per sq ft and do more; awnings are the permanent, zero-maintenance choice
Questions people ask
What type of awning is best for Malaysian weather?
For a roof you will look at every day, laminated glass or 4 mm PVDF ACP. For a roof where heat matters most, PU metal. For a space you want open to the air, a motorised louvred pergola. All of these handle heavy rain and direct sun for 15 – 30 years when the frame is galvanised or aluminium.
What is the coolest awning material?
PU metal, because of its foam core. ACP with an aluminium strip ceiling comes next. Clear polycarbonate and zinc are the hottest.
Which awning lets light in but keeps rain out?
Glass, and a louvred pergola with the blades closed. Polycarbonate lets light in too but yellows and gets hot.
Is a pergola the same as an awning?
No. An awning is a roof attached to the house wall. A pergola is a freestanding or semi-freestanding frame, in Malaysia usually aluminium with adjustable louvres instead of a solid roof.
